Suburban Woman Learn About “Where Does the Money Go”

The monthly meeting of the Suburban Woman's Club of South Plainfield was held on November 3rd at the American Legion Hall.  Diana Cotone, President called the meeting to order followed by members reciting the Collect and the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.  Hostesses Diane Gallo and Lucy Hudson were thanked for today's refreshments. The recently  updated  2016-2017 yearbooks for Suburban Club members were distributed and Chrissy Buteas  received thanks for completing this yearly project.  Donations were then collected for the annual Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets to be created by Home Life Chair, Terri Wilkinson on behalf of the Suburban Woman's Club.  These baskets are donated to Social Services in South Plainfield for distribution to needy families in our community.

President Cotone  called upon Lucy Hudson, Treasurer and Alberta Esposito, Recording Secretary for this month's reports  followed by each  department chair to give updates on their respective activities and projects.  Our  Membership Chair, Grace Bertucci, introduced two new members who were warmly welcomed by the membership.  Adele Kwiatkowski, Public Issues Chair,  reported that the USO  is asking for support in  sending greetings and good wishes to our service men and women overseas during the holidays.  Our club along with the other  women's clubs in the federation will participate in this program via the USO website.  Legislative/By-Laws Chair, Kathy Wosniak, is tracking NJ State Senate Bill 2528 regarding underage marriage and forced marriage in the state of  New Jersey.  The Bill is making its way through the state senate with bipartisan support.  Members of the New Jersey State Federation of  Women's Clubs, including Suburban Woman, fully supported this bill through a strong  letter writing campaign.

Historian, Kathy Wells, reminded us that Nov. 16th is founders day of the New Jersey Federation of Women'  Clubs and August 26th is observed as  women's equality day. Education Chair, Nancy Stillman Pender, announced that the annual South Plainfield spelling bee for 4th and 5th graders, co-sponsored by the Suburban Woman's Club, is scheduled for Feb. 7,  2017.  Also, the Suburban Woman  will once again, sponsor a junior high school girl for the Girls Career Institute.  The delegate will attend during June 5-8, 2017.

In support of the 2016-2018 Special State Project, Prevent Child Abuse-NJ, the club continues with our fundraising projects to support this effort.  In addition, several of our members continue to knit  purple baby caps to further support the Prevent Child Abuse project.

At the close of the business meeting, Jane Rundella, VP and Program Chair, introduced guest speaker, Mary Ann Rivell, Public Information Officer, N.J. Lottery, who presented the program "Where Does The Money Go". The group really enjoyed the fun and very informative program.  Members were surprised to learn  about the various programs in New Jersey that are supported by the  money from the  lottery including the Veterans, higher education direct scholarships, grants for colleges and universities, human resource programs, etc.
