The Suburban Woman's Club of South Plainfield held a regular meeting on May 4th at the American Legion Hall, Oak Tree Rd., South Plainfield.  Officers and committee chairs reported on various ongoing projects and business items were discussed.  The members then proceeded to vote on the disbursement of monies raised during the past season of fundraising as reported by Treasurer Lucy Hudson.  Three $1,000 scholarships would be awarded to qualifying graduating seniors of South Plainfield High School selected in a blind essay review.  This year’s recipients were Camryn Schaeffer, Ashli Bell, and Sara Roman. These awards were presented on June 5th during the South Plainfield High School Awards Program.  Contributions to Prevent Child Abuse-NJ (this is the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs special state project for 2017-2018);  Operation Smile, South Plainfield Library Children's Programs, South Plainfield Fire Department and Rescue Squad; two local food banks; the Veteran's Hospital at Menlo Park; FISH program; Life Straws Program and the  local ASPCA. were also awarded at the beginning of June.

Again this year, The Suburban Woman's Club sponsored a delegate from South Plainfield High School to the Girls Career Institute (GCI) program held June 5-8. This program offers an upcoming senior girl to a mini college experience over a four day period at Douglas College in New Brunswick. The Girls Career Institute began seventy years ago and provides the delegate with an insight of college life. The program also offers an opportunity to learn of the many career options available to young women today.  This year's Suburban Woman's delegate was Jada Shucai and the alternate was Lindsey Soper, sponsored by a member club of the College District of the New Jersey State Federation of Woman's Clubs.

The club held their installation luncheon on June 1st at Giovanna's Restaurant in Plainfield.  Adele Kwiatkowki, Banquet Chair thanked her committee members for the artful programs and beautiful table arrangements. After the luncheon, the installation of officers’ ceremony was conducted by Maribeth Hugelmeyer, College District Vice President of the NJ State Federation of Women's Clubs. Officers for the 2017-2018 year are:   Diana Cotone, President; Jane Rundella, Vice President; Lucy Hudson, Treasurer;  Alberta Esposito, Recording Secretary; Orvie Hoffman, Federation/Corresponding Secretary.   President Diana Cotone gave a brief address followed by closing remarks delivered by Adele Kwiatkowki.

Activities for the month of June will conclude with several members attending the College District Council Meeting held on June 22nd at the State Federation Headquarters in New Brunswick.
