After what can easily be described as a successful fund-raising year, The Suburban Woman’s Club of South Plainfield met on May 3rd at the American Legion Hall in South Plainfield to decide how to allocate the funds that were raised. President Diana Cotone called the meeting to order and thanked April Bengivenga and Joyce Dieterle for the delicious refreshments provided.
The Club’s voluntary work consists of awarding scholarships, supporting local charities as well as the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs State Project. The Club is very proud again to support the American Legion, South Plainfield Fire Department, Rescue Squad, Library, South Plainfield Social Services and Sacred Heart Social Concerns. In addition, it will donate to the Menlo Park Veterans Memorial Home, FISH Hospitality, Plainfield Humane Society and St. Jude’s Research Hospital. Also, Suburban Woman’s Club is pleased to support the NJSFWC State Project, Prevent Child Abuse-NJ, whose mission is to promote great childhoods, positive parenting, and healthy child development.
As a member of the international General Federation of Women’s Clubs, Suburban Woman’s Club supports Operation Smile, which offers life altering facial surgery to third world children; Life Straws, which provides personal water filters to people living in areas with limited access to clean water; and Heifer International. This organization gives animals to impoverished families, educates farmers in sustainable agriculture, helps farmers gain access to markets, and empowers women to gain an education and business skills.
The effort and love that Club members devote to fund raising brings great satisfaction on many levels but perhaps the most rewarding is in the scholarships given to South Plainfield High School seniors. This year the Club is very pleased to announce that it will give four scholarships to deserving students.
Members also heard a review of the NJSFWC College District Spring Conference and Achievement Day held on April 26th at the Somerville Elks Lodge and led by Club member and District VP, Maribeth Hugelmeyer. Six Club members attended and on behalf of the Club accepted certificates recognizing its good works and fund raising. Another important event, the NJSFWC Convention, will have four Club members in attendance on May 9th. They will see President Cotone and VP Jane Rundella enrolled in the NJSFWC Honor Roll, the highest distinction for a member to achieve.
