The South Plainfield Softball Team had another exciting week of action where they played in the GMC and NJSIAA tournaments. The Lady Tigers got things rolling by defeating West Morris-Mendham 3-0 on Tuesday in the quarter-final round of the NJSIAA Tournament.  On Friday they traveled to Governor Livingston as the underdog against the number two seed in the state tournament. South Plainfield was able to pull off the upset by a score of 2-1.  The week ended with a rematch of last year’s GMC final against South Brunswick.  The Lady Tigers lost a heart breaker in extra innings 7-4.  An integral part of the Lady Tigers’ success during the week was the efforts and contributions of senior shortstop Caitlin Hughes, this weeks’ athlete of the week.

Coming off her outstanding junior season, Caitlin started the 2016-2017 season where she left off last year.  On the season, she has a .500 batting average for the Lady Tigers.  On the week, Caity batted an amazing .530 average with two doubles and two triples.  She also stole four bases and had three runs batted in.  On the season she, has five doubles, a state leading eleven triples, and five homeruns.  Caity also has twenty stolen bases and twenty three runs batted in.  Caity is now the all-time South Plainfield hit leader with 166 hits.  With her ability and speed, the coaches and South Plainfield will be hoping Caitlin will help the Lady Tigers capture a North II Group III Sectional Championship.
