The South Plainfield High School Wrestling Team completed their dual meet portion of the season this past weekend in Toms River. The Tigers entered the week as the top seed in the Central Jersey Group II Sectional Tournament and dominated their way through to win their 16th Sectional Title. In the quarterfinals they defeated Metuchen High School 78-0. In the semi-finals the Tigers beat Delran High School 66-3. The team then defeated Raritan High School in the finals 55-12 to move on to the Group II semi-finals on Sunday. They defeated state ranked Hanover Park in the semi-finals 37-25 to set up a showdown with High Point Regional High School in the finals. The Tigers defeated High Point 46-26 to capture their fourth consecutive Group State Title (first time in school history) and their 12th overall State Title. One wrestler that played an extremely important role in the team’s success was freshman 106lber. Jacob DelVecchio.
Jacob started the season with a 3rd place finish at the Morris Knolls Tournament. He also won the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament at 113lbs. Jacob currently sits at 29-3 on the season. This past week, Jacob went 5-0 scoring pins in four of his five matches. In the group finals, Jacob pinned Clayton Utter of High Point in 26 seconds to close out the match. Some media outlets have Utter ranked 8th in the state. The Tigers are gearing up to compete in the District 17 Tournament and will try to extend their state record of 34th District Tournament Titles in a row. Jacob will look to help the team by advancing to the Region Tournament.
