The South Plainfield Wrestling Team finished their dual meet season with an impressive 30-1 record. This past week saw the Tigers defeated Hamilton East-Steinert (70-6), Wall (50-23), and Hopewell Valley (41-12) to win the Central Jersey Group III Sectional Championship. This advanced South Plainfield to the Group III State Championships. The wrestling team defeated Sparta (44-15) in the semi-finals to set up a match with South Jersey rival Delsea. In the finals, Jacob Painton helped the Tigers defend their Group III State Championship, winning 38-23.
Jacob Painton is having a very competitive season. After being seeded fifth in the GMC Tournament, Jacob bettered his seed by pulling off a few upsets on the way to a fourth place finish. During the Championship run for the Tigers, Painton went 4-1. He saved his biggest win for the Group III State Final when he pinned Tim Spatola in 2:36. Jacob’s pin started the momentum to spark the Tigers to their 10th State Title in the program’s history. Painton and the rest of the wrestlers will now look forward to winning their state record 33rd straight District Title and then begin their individual seasons.
