The South Plainfield High School Wrestling Team is gearing up for a run in the NJSIAA Team Tournament as they look to win their sixth consecutive Sectional title which would extend the school record of consecutive sectional titles. The Tigers enter the tournament as the number 1 seed and will start the Tournament off on Monday February 10th with a home dual meet against rival North Plainfield. If they win the Central Jersey Group II Section, they will set their sights on competing for a fifth consecutive State Group Title down in Toms River. One of the wrestlers that will be integral in the teams post season success is freshman, JJ Giordano.
JJ currently sits at 21-4 on the season. He was 2nd at the Morris Knolls Tournament. JJ entered this past weekend as the 3rd seed in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament and battled his way to his first GMC Tournament title. In the first round JJ pinned New Brunswick’s Darwin Cuadrado in 49 seconds, in the quarterfinals JJ defeated Giovanni Alejandro of St. Joseph’s Metuchen 5-0, and in the semi-finals, JJ came from behind to beat the second seeded Ken Beck of Middlesex 6-4 to advance to his first county final. In the finals, JJ wrestled returning GMC Finalist and Region V 5th place finisher Vincent Nadera of Old Bridge. JJ was down 1-0 with 45 seconds to go when he scored on a low single and rode Nadera out for the remainder of the period to capture the title. The Tigers are back in action this week with away duals meets against Bishop Ahr on Wednesday and Emerson/Park Ridge Saturday at 3:00PM.
