The South Plainfield Softball Team had an exciting week of action where they played in the GMC and NJSIAA tournaments. The Lady Tigers got things rolling by defeating Spotswood 7-0 on Monday in the first round of the GMC Tournament. On Wednesday they avenged one of their three losses of the season beating Bishop Ahr 3-0. This set up a meeting with Somerville on Thursday in the first round of the NJSIAA State Tournament. Once again the Lady Tigers dominated winning 7-0. This prepared South Plainfield for a rematch with JP Stevens in the GMC semi-final on Sunday. The Lady Tigers advanced to the finals with a hard fought 2-1 victory. A key part of the Lady Tigers’ success this week were the efforts and contributions of senior pitcher Katherine Vill, this weeks’ athlete of the week.
Coming off her stellar junior season, Katherine started the 2016-2017 season where she left off last year. On the season, she has a 22-3 record for the Tigers. Katherine went 4-0 on the week, shutting out three opponents while only giving up one unearned run. She struck out 27 in the week and only gave up 13 hits in 28 innings of work. Katherine also surpassed the school record of 81 victories. Her career now stands at 83 wins to just 19 losses. Vill has dominated her opponents on the season, throwing eleven shut outs and striking out 175 batters. She has an impressive 0.88 earned run average. A work horse on the mound, throwing 167 innings, Katherine is poised to help the Tigers in the upcoming GMC finals and NJSIAA tournament. With her work ethic, the coaches and South Plainfield will be relying heavily on Katherine’s pitching.
