The Girls Winter Track Program ran away with the Blue Division Championship Saturday as they out hustled, jumped and threw their way past rivals JFK, Metuchen, Spotswood and Bishop Ahr. South Plainfield was anchored by a balanced attack in the Shot Put, High Jump, Hurdles, 2 Mile, and 4 x 400 meter relay. It was not just those with medals who paced the ladies to the divisional title. Points were gained in every event. This is the first divisional title for the girls' winter track team in over 20 years. Much of this success was accomplished in part by senior Kayla Greenleaf.
Kayla Greenleaf has had a fantastic season so far for the Winter Track Program. Last week, however, was the Senior Shot Putters biggest week yet! On Saturday, January 6th, Kayla had the best throw in the county as she teamed up with fellow senior Brianna Atkinson to bring home the gold at the GMC Relays. On Tuesday, January 9th, Kayla tossed a season best 35 feet, 10 inches, to place first in the 12th Grade Girls Division at the Howell Shot Put Series. Then, on Saturday, January 13th, Kayla brought home the bronze at the GMC Individual Championships, while guiding the Girls' Program to its first winter divisional title in over 20 years. Kayla looks forward to continued success in the upcoming State Relay and Individual Championships.
Each week the South Plainfield High School Athlete Department will feature an athlete of the week.
