The South Plainfield Wrestling Team has wrapped up another excellent week of competition. After beating Red Division rival South Brunswick on Wednesday 61-6, the #3 ranked Team in NJ looked to defend their GMC Conference title. After advancing 12 wrestlers into the top eight, the wrestlers ran away with their 9th straight GMC Conference title. The Tigers won 6 individual titles and placed 10 wrestlers in the top four of the tournament. South Plainfield can attribute their ongoing success on the mat to the contributions of this weeks’ athlete of the week, Sophomore 195 pounder Luke Niemeyer.
Niemeyer proved as a sophomore that he is ready and able to step in and make an impact for the wrestling line-up. Already, Luke has accumulated 25 wins to only 1 loss, and 19 of his wins are by fall. Luke had an outstanding weekend in the GMC Wrestling Tournament. After a quick fall in 26 seconds over Nick Komosinski of Spotswood, in the first round, Luke rolled into the Semi-Finals with a pin of Colonia’s Christian Irizarry in 1:31. In the semifinals, he controlled Monroe’s Kaylon Bradley with a decision of 8-2 setting up a final matchup against returning GMC Champion Andrew Brazicki of Bishop Ahr. Luke won his first GMC Individual Title at 195lbs with a hard fought 3-1 overtime victory. With the team sectionals quickly approaching, South Plainfield will continue to rely on Luke as a staple upper weight.
