The South Plainfield High School Girls’ track team is off to a solid start to their 2017 season with a record of 3-0 and a strong showing at several relay meets. This past week, the Tigers rolled through divisional rivals Metuchen and Middlesex by the scores of 88-49 and 69-61. A big part of the success the Tigers have enjoyed has been due in a large part to the steadfast contributions of Junior Captain Ria Soni, this week’s athlete of the week.

After a competitive sophomore campaign with a constant role for the program, Ria dedicated herself over the summer. This helped her come into her junior season physically stronger. Ria had a great season in cross country and in winter track. She has shown consistent improvement as the year has progressed and when her team needed her to step up this past week she was more than up to the task. After running a 5:49 in the mile (her personal best) and earning valuable team points in a tight meet with Middlesex and Metuchen, Ria then needed to double up and win the 800 as well.  After falling behind early, Ria made an ambitious move to take the lead 200 meters into the race. She was able to beat her opponents and finish the 800m race in 2:36 (also her personal best). Ria’s lead by example mentality and dedication to her team will greatly benefit the Lady Tiger track program as they look for continued success.
