The South Plainfield High School Wrestling Team won their sixth consecutive sectional title this past Friday as they defeated Rumson – Fair Haven 42-30 in front of a packed house in Anthony Cotoia Gymnasium. The Tigers traveled down to the State Group Tournament on Sunday where they fell to the Eagles of West Deptford concluding their dual meet season. Overall the Tigers finished with an 18-8 record. The team will look to extend their state record and capture their 36th District Tournament Title in a row. One of the wrestlers that will be integral in the teams post season success is junior, Thomas Renna.
Thomas currently sits at 23-3 on the season. He was 2nd at the Morris Knolls Tournament and 2nd at the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament. This past week Tommy went 4-0 with two pins and two decisions. His 2-1 decision of Liam Horan of Rumson – Fair Haven provided a spark to help the Tigers capture the sectional championship. With time running out and down by one point, Tommy gutted out a go-behind to score the decisive takedown with under two seconds left in the match, securing the victory 2-1. The Tigers are back in action on Saturday at the District 17 Tournament which is being held at South Plainfield.
