NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — The price of tuition, fees, room and board at Rutgers University is set to rise in the upcoming school year. But how, exactly, will this affect you?

TAPinto New Brunswick combed through budget documents to figure that out. A story yesterday broke down increases to tuition and mandatory fees. Here’s a rundown on how the price hikes will touch housing and dining at Rutgers’ New Brunswick and Piscataway campuses.

For starters, housing costs will climb by 1.5 percent from the 2016-17 academic year.

Housing costs pay for the room itself, “residence education” and internet and cable.

Below is a chart of what that means for various on-campus residents, including undergrads and graduate students, in New Brunswick. These figures apply to what Rutgers considers its most common housing arrangements, but charges may vary, depending on your individual situation.

And now to meal plans.

Dining services charges will rise by 1.7 percent from last year, according to Rutgers. Keep in mind that these meal plans apply only to New Brunswick and Piscataway.

Overall, the actual cost of attendance should run about 1.7 percent more than it did last year. But Rutgers noted that many students pay less than the sticker price, thanks to scholarships and financial aid.
