SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – A lightning strike is the possible cause of an afternoon house fire earlier today on South Plainfield Avenue. South Plainfield Fire units responded to a house fire on a home located on the 300 block of South Plainfield Avenue. The fire appeared to be on the roof as South Plainfield Avenue was closed between Joan Street and Park Avenue. There have been no reports of injuries in the fire.

At approximately 2:10pm the Borough issued a Nixle alert about the impending thunderstorm. Soon after rain, lightning and winds overspread the area. Areas of Piscataway and Dunellen have reported a number of downed trees and powerlines from the storms.

The National Weather Service is forecasting hot humid weather with a chance of thunderstorms to continue throughout the weekend.
