Tigers Wrestling Has 30th District Championship at Hand

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The South Plainfield Wrestling Tigers are closing in on their 30th consecutive District Championship as they advanced 11 of their 12 semifinalist to the District 12 Championship this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in South Plainfield.

Jeff Plungis set the tone for the Tigers by pinning Governor Livingston’s Nick Mele in the second period of their bout at 106lbs. Plungis at 106, Dan Hedden at 126, Inan Sikel at 152 and Jordan Handwerger at 160 all won by pins for South Plainfield.

The 170-pound bracket was the upset special of the day.  The number-five seed, Plainfield’s Diego Rivera, upset Watchung Hills’ first seed, Ben Gomes.  In the other half of the 170-pound bracket, South Plainfield’s Scott Quiroga, the number-six seed, knocked off Middlesex/Dunellen’s number-two seed, Brandon Bollin.  Quirga would get a takedown in the final seconds of overtime to win 5-3.
