First-place Alfie's Boys went head-to-head with one of their most formidable opponents in the American Division, the powerhouse Twin City Pharmacy squad, and Alfie's Boys not only prevailed, but they beat one of their key rivals soundly, 15-5, in the Jim Pornovets Memorial Golf League, led by the solid play of Bill Mann, who turned in a 2-over 35.
Mann got a lot of help from Danny Griffin, who is limping and moaning with his bad leg and still playing very well as he turned in a 4-over 37.
Guy Severini added to his string of good rounds with a 37 for Twin City Pharmacy, and Jay Coppola chipped in with a 39 in a losing effort.
Mark Van Name earned the medal with his 37 to lead his team to a surprisingly easy victory over the defending champions, Unique Sports Accessories, 13-7. Captain Dale Dube is still searching for his A-game and is delighted that his team is able to pull off some big wins while he is having his problems.
Gene DeCarlo of Unique Sports lit up the course with his pre-Fourth of July fireworks show shooting an even-par 33, and Old Reliable Ted Stanik contributed a 39, but their fine efforts came short as their team went down to defeat.
Tony Cotone, Jr. the Captain of KC's Korner, is really mumbling to himself these days about how a little luck here or there could have made such a difference in his team's standings as they recorded their third tie in eight weeks, this time against Witty's Liquors. KC's Korner could easily be tied for second place instead of being tied for last place had it not been for a few putts that lipped out.
Pete Gustafson and Billy Capparelli looked sharp in posting a pair of 38's for Witty's Liquors while Dan Conti earned medalist honors for KC's Korner with a 40.
Mark "Mr. Steady" Chichvar was flabergasted when his mother-in-law, Eleanor, decided to put on a cheerleading show featuring four flaming batons to inspire his team to march from Oxford Place to the course to take on Sport & Social. The impressive presentation and Eleanor's dazzling outfit worked their inspirational wonders as McCriskin's-Gustafson whipped Sport & Social,13-7, and now reigns supreme in first-place in the National Division with the best record in the league, a dazzling 7-1-0.
Chichvar once agained played superbly and came home with a 2-over 35, and he got plenty of support from Kris "the cigar man" Krantz who carded a 36.
For the struggling Sport & Social squad, Dennis Bibby had a 33.
Todd Gregory, who played for many years for Sport & Social and is now retired and living in Pennsylvania, returned to the area to see some relatives. After learning of his former teram's problems, Gregory offered to come back to play some night to provide some sort of inspiration to his old buddies. It turns out, he has been taking pep rally lessons from the Famous Eleanor and wishes to try the methods he has learned thus far.
Wayne Lavender of the South Plainfield Funeral Home is extremely grateful to Bill Casper, the teaching pro at West Nine, for all his helpful swing tips, and Lavender looked really sharp in carding an impressive 3-over 36 to spark his squad to a 15-5 triumph over the Italian-American Club.
Matt Ward, Sr. contributed a 38 to his team's victory while his son, Matt Ward., Jr., left more than a few out there on his way to a 41.
For the Italian-American Club, Frank Capparelli was smooth, graceful, and impressively long in posting a terrific 2-over 35.
In the final match of the night, Windows Plus had no problem in crushing Dirty Harry & Friends, 17-3, to keep Capt. Harry Combe and his buddies winless after 8 weeks of play.
LOW SCORES FOR THE NIGHT: Frank Capparelli, 35; Mark Chichvar, 35; Dave Mancini, 35; Bill Mann, 35; Kris Krantz, 36; Wayne Lavender, 36; Scott Steele, 36; Danny Griffin, 37; Guy Severini, 37; Charlie Oates, 37.
