A man and a woman were under arrest in the Borough of South Plainfield, accused of scamming an elderly woman from Memphis, TN, and authorities are again warning residents to be wary of such schemes.
Police say the victim received a phone call on Thursday, May 21st, 2020, from a man who said the victim's grandson was arrested and needed bail money for his release.
The victim was instructed to place $1,800 in cash into a package and mail it to an abandoned home in South Plainfield, NJ.
The victim became suspicious and contacted police.
The South Plainfield Police Department coordinated with the delivery service to set up a controlled delivery to the address where the suspects told the victim to mail the package containing the cash.
On Friday, May 22nd, at 10:00 am, police arrested 52-year-old, Dignora Gomez and 51-year-old Jose Gomez, both of South Plainfield, NJ, after they arrived at the abandoned residence to claim the package.
Both suspects were in possession of numerous documents linking them to the scam and other victims of the same scam. Three packages containing large amounts of cash were recovered and additional charges are pending.
Both Dignora and Jose Gomez were charged with Theft by Extortion, Theft by Deception, and Identity Theft. They were transported to the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center.
