Well, we’re almost done with one month of 2018.  Then there’s eleven more to go, at least one-and-a-half of which will be wintry.  Before you start lamenting that, let’s look at the news from South Plainfield Library:

We’ll have our updated usual schedule of children’s programming, plus extras, next week.  For those of you new to said updated usual schedule, here it is again:
            - Our next Kidcraft program is Friday afternoon (Jan. 26th) at 3:00.  The kids will be making a winter-themed wood craft.  Pre-registration is required, and there’s a $1.00 materials fee, payable upon registration.
-The kids’ Chess Club will be meeting on Saturday morning at 11:30, right after the Saturday “Storytime” program.  (See below.)  Participants may bring their own sets, or use one from the Library.  We’ll let you know if we put together a Checkers Club.
            - Our next “Special Needs Sensory Storytime” program is set for Sunday afternoon at 3:00.  It’s for those with special needs, from pre-school age to young adult, who might be uncomfortable in a standard “Storytime” program.
            - The Monday “LEGO Builders Club” program will be held on Monday and Thursday afternoons at 3:00.  We’ll also hold our informal meeting for homeschooling parents during the Thursday program, also at 3:00.
             - Our new Chinese Language “Storytime” program will be held on Monday afternoon at 1:30.  It’s for kids age 2-6, and features stories and songs in Mandarin presented by Miss Kitty.  English descriptions of the stories and songs will be available.
             - The “Storytime” program, for children age 3 & over, will be held on Tuesday morning at 10:30, Wednesday evening at 6:30 and Thursday afternoon at 1:15.
             - Right after “Storytime” on Tuesday, we’ll have our “Puzzle & Game Playtime” program, starting at 11:30.  And there’s our recently-added second “Playtime” program on Thursday morning, also at 11:30.
             - The “Kid’s Corner Book Club”, for kids age 8-10, will meet on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30.  Participants can stop by the Circulation Desk for a copy of this month’s book.
             - “Toddler Time”, for children age 2 & 3, will be held on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10:30.
-Our next “Tabletop Gaming” program on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00.  It’s for young people ages 10 & over, and they can play all sorts of non-electronic board games, from the classics to more elaborate role-playing games.  Strat-o-matic fans are welcome to attend.
             - “Babytime: Can’t Walk”, for children age 2 & under who can’t walk on their own, will be held on Friday morning at 10:15.  It’ll be followed by “Babytime: Can’t Stop Walking”, for children age 2 & under who can walk on their own, at 11:15.
            - And on Saturday morning at 10:30, we’ll have our “Saturday Storytime” program for all ages.
All of these programs (except for “Kidcraft”) are presented free of charge, and no pre-registration is needed.  For more information, please call us and select the Children’s Room extension.  (See below for the number.)

Surprisingly enough, we still have room for some programs for adults next week.  And here’s the rundown:
            - Our ESL Conversation groups will be meeting on Monday morning at 10:30, and on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00.  Those getting used to English can stop by and practice their conversation skills.  Pre-registration is requested.
            - Our Job Search Skills Coaching sessions, provided by Professional Service Group of New Brunswick, will be held Monday afternoon from 1:00-4:00.  These one-on-one sessions are by appointment only.
            - Our next “Monday Night Movie” presentation is set for Monday night at 6:30.  There’s no admission charge, and the popcorn is on us.  Please call for title and content information.  We can say that this week’s movie is a wilderness survival drama starring Idris Elba and Kate Winslett.  Feel free to watch it because it’s there.  (We’ll run the movie again on Wednesday afternoon at 12:30, but you’ll have to bring your own popcorn.)
            - And we have a special program on Saturday afternoon at 2:00.  It’s the living history program “Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Man of Conscience”.  Actor/historian Keith Henley will appear as Dr. King.  There’s no charge for the program, but pre-registration is requested.  This program is produced by the American Historical Theater, and is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the NJ Council for the Humanities.

We have room for a quick advisory.  While the weather of the last few days has been a bit less harsh, there’s still a chance we may have to close again due to hazardous winter conditions.  If you’re not sure if we’re open or not, it’s easy to check.  We’ll post our status on our website and Facebook page.  We’ll also pass the word to radio stations WCTC (1450AM) and NJ 101.5FM, and News 12 on TV.

That’s about all for this week.  If you still have questions, you can check our website at www.southplainfield.lib.nj.us or you can look up our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/southplainfieldlibrary.  Or you could just give us a call at (908) 754-7885.  See you next time, and let’s hope we don’t get another polar vortex.  Those get to be a real drag really quick.
