Did you miss a movie that you wanted to see in the theaters and don’t want to pay to rent it or for the DVD? Come to “Monday Night Movies” at the library.  It’s all the fun of a movie theater but none of the cost.  We are showing brand new releases every Monday night and we will be providing popcorn for all who attend. This week’s movie stars Margot Robbie and Best Supporting Actress Winner Allison Janney. A real-life portrayal of Tonya Harding (Robbie), an Olympic figure skater who rose to fame not only for her skill on the ice but for her part in disabling a competitor in order to remove her from the competition. The story follows Tonya's rise to stardom in the competitive figure skating world as she consistently rose to the high ranks of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, followed by her rapid decline after an attack on a fellow skater, Nancy Kerrigan. The movie is rated R, so please be advised. The movie that is shown on Monday night will also be shown again on the subsequent Wednesday at 12:30 pm for those that can’t make the Monday night showing or don’t like to drive at night.  Stop by the library and pick up a schedule of the movies being shown.

On Sunday March 18 at 2pm the library welcomes Thomas Edison Center’s museum Director Kathleen Carlucci for a lecture and discussion of the incredible inventions of Thomas Edison.  The Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park offers a traveling program (TECMP) that is designed to introduce the incredible inventions of Thomas Edison to those who have an interest in learning about the “Wizard of Menlo Park.” Edison was a pioneer in so many fields, and he managed to streamline the process of invention during his auspicious career. The Menlo Park historic site is synonymous with research and development because it was on this here that Edison conceived and fabricated 400 of his most important inventions within a period of six years. Some of his most famous inventions that were created on the Christie Street site were the phonograph, the perfection of incandescent lighting, and a practical method of conducting electrical distribution. This program includes a PowerPoint presentation with a lecture and discussion. She will be bringing original artifacts and Edison related items such as: a 100+ year old working Phonograph, telegraph key, Edison replica light bulbs, model of Edison electric train, light a light bulb with hand crank dynamo, series and parallel circuits, iron ore separator and more.

South Plainfield Public Library welcomes back Michael Conklin who will present ‘S Wonderful: The Life and Music of George Gershwin on Saturday March 31 at 2pm.  Please join us for a celebration of composer George Gershwin! Born in Brooklyn in 1898, the second of four children from a close-knit immigrant family, he began his musical career as a song-plugger on Tin Pan Alley, but was soon writing his own pieces. He and his brother, lyricist Ira Gershwin, went on to write many successful musicals for the stage and screen, and many songs which are now considered standards. He also led a double life, trying to make his mark as a serious composer. At the age of 38, he died of a brain tumor. Today, he remains one of America's most beloved composers.

Mr. Conklin is an active jazz scholar, cultural historian, and writer who specializes in jazz history and American music, music of the antebellum South, the Harlem Renaissance, and issues of race and class.  As a scholar of jazz history and American culture, Mr. Conklin’s teaching and research interests lie at the intersection of the literary, visual, and musical arts, with a focus on the blues elements that cohesively link the three forms. He’s been teaching at Brookdale Community College for nearly two decades and has served as an adjunct professor of jazz history at The College of New Jersey since 2004. This program is free but registration is required. To sign up for the program, contact the South Plainfield Library at 908-754-7885.
