Time for news from your friendly neighborhood AIR-CONDITIONED South Plainfield Library:

First, a reminder that we’ll be closed on Sundays for the rest of the summer.  Our other operating hours remain the same.

Turning to our very active schedule of children’s programming for the next few days:
-Saturday afternoon (July 14th) at 1:00, we’ll be holding a multi-cultural program for all ages on the Muslim festival of Eid.  There will be stories, activities and refreshments.  It’s being held at the Senior Center, just down the street at 90 Maple Ave.
-On Monday afternoon at 2:00, we’ll be hosting a children’s music program featuring Mr. Scott (no, not that Mr. Scott), the Music Man (no, not that Music Man).  It’s for all ages.
-Right after that program, we’ll have our Monday meeting of the LEGO Builders Club at 3:15.  We’ll provide the LEGO pieces.  And they’ll have another meeting on Thursday afternoon at 3:00.
-Later on Monday evening at 6:30, the “Reading Buddies” will be meeting.  This program is for children from 1st grade & over.  Pre-registration is required.
-We’ll have our “Storytime” programs on Tuesday morning at 10:30, and Thursday afternoon at 1:15.  They’re for kids age 3 & over.
-Following the Tuesday “Storytime”, we’ll have our “Puzzle & Game Playtime” at 11:30.  It’s also for children age 3 & over.  It’ll be held again on Thursday morning, also at 11:30.
-On Tuesday afternoon at 3:00, we’ll have another STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Mathematics) program for kids age 6 & over.  Participants will make construction projects using newspaper.
-On Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10:30, we’ll have our “Toddler Time” story program for children age 2 & 3.
-The next meeting of the Anime Club is set for Wednesday afternoon at 3:00.  It’s for young people age 10 & over.  Subtitles will be provided.
-Our Wednesday night “Storytime” program will be pre-empted next week by a special program.  It’s “Fish Tales and Ocean Oddballs”, an interactive program on sea creatures.  It’s for children age 4 & over, and it’ll be held at 6:30 at the aforementioned Senior Center.  In lieu of an admission fee, we ask that you bring non-perishable food items for the South Plainfield Food Pantry.
-On Thursday evening at 6:30, we’ll hold another Spanish language “Storytime” program.  It’s a bilingual (English/Spanish) program for kids of all ages.
-Next Friday morning, we’ll have our two “Babytime” programs for children age 2 & under, both walking and non-walking.  The program are at 10:15 and 11:15, respectively.
-That afternoon at 1:00, we’ll have another “Drive-In Movie” craft program for kids of all ages.  You need to bring a box large enough to a kid to sit in.  (I guess a refrigerator box might work as a mini-van; that’s up to you.)  We’ll provide the other materials, and a movie will be shown.  Snacks are allowed, within reason.  (No tailgating.)
-And, after the movie is done, we’ll have a craft program for pre-schoolers at 4:30.  The kids will learn how to use safety scissors.
-And here’s an advance notice: on Saturday morning, July 21st, at 11:00, we hope (we really hope) we’ll be holding the oft-postponed Holi Celebration program.  It’ll include stories, crafts, dance and (weather permitting) outdoor activities.
All of these programs, unless otherwise noted, are presented free of charge and no pre-registration is required.  Please check with our Children’s staff for more details.

Think we’ve got enough going on next week?  That’s a big “Not by a long shot” on that one.  Here’s the list of adult programming:
-Saturday afternoon (again, that’s July 14th) at 2:00, we’ll be hosting the musical program “Doo Wop Groups of New Jersey”.  This multi-media program will be led by music historians Charlie & Pamela Horner.  Pre-registration is required for this free program.
-Our English Conversation Groups will be meeting on Monday morning at 10:30, Monday evening at 7:00, and Tuesday afternoon at 1:00.  These ESL groups care for people wishing to practice their conversation skills.  Pre-registration is requested.
-We’ll be hosting Job Search Skills Coaching, provided by Professional Service Group of New Brunswick, on Monday afternoon from 1:00-4:00.  These one-on-one sessions are by appointment only.
-Our next “Monday Night Movie” presentation is set for Monday night at 6:30.  There’s no charge for the movie, and you don’t need to pre-register.    Please call us for title and content information.  We can say that it’s a docudrama about a scandal involving Sen. Ted Kennedy in 1969.  If you miss it on Monday, we’ll be showing it again on Wednesday afternoon at 12:30.  We’ll provide the popcorn on Monday; Papa John’s will provide pizza on Wednesday.  Please keep the area around your seat clean; our staff is busy enough as it is.
-There will be another session of “Homeschooling 101” on Thursday afternoon at 3:00.  It runs concurrent with the LEGO Builders Club, and provides some basic information on homeschooling.  You don’t need to pre-register.

And, finally, our Summer Reading Program is still going strong.  There’s still time to sign up; we have groups for children of all ages, young adults, and not-quite-so-young adults.  Please stop by the Children’s Room or the Circulation Desk for more details.

That’s about all for this week.  For more details, please call us at (908) 754-7885.  You may also check our website at www.southplainfield.lib.nj.us or check our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/southplainfieldlibrary.  We hope to see you over here very soon, if only to get out of the heat.  (Hey, winter is only five months away, folks.)
