The South Plainfield Wrestling Team finished their dual meet season with a deceiving 20-7 record.  This past week saw the Tigers defeat Ewing (69-4), Bordentown Regional (49-9), and Ocean Township (54-6) to win the Central Jersey Group III Sectional Championship.  This advanced South Plainfield to the Group III State Championships yet again.  The wrestling team defeated Voorhees (50-26) in the semi-finals to set up a match with South Jersey rival Delsea.  South Plainfield won the Group III State Championship for the third straight year, winning 48-23.  Much of this past weeks success was due to the consistent wrestling of junior, Joe Sacco.

Joe Sacco is having a very successful season.  His record currently stands at 29-5.  During the season he has finished as the runner-up in both the Morris Knolls Tournament and the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament.  South Plainfield’s brutal schedule enabled Joe to peak at the perfect time.  During the Championship run for the Tigers, Joe went 5-0. One of his biggest wins was over returning State Champion Jake Benner from Ocean Township 6-2 in OT.  On Sunday Joe pinned in both the semi-finals and finals to help the Tigers to their 11th State Title in the program’s history.  Sacco and the rest of the wrestlers will now look to win their state record 34th consecutive District Title while their individual seasons begin.
