The South Plainfield Wrestling Team competed at the Region 4 tournament this past weekend. The top four wrestlers of each weight class will go on to wrestle in the NJSIAA Individual State Championship at the Atlantic City Convention Center. South Plainfield continued to have a stellar year advancing six wrestlers to the State Tournament. Junior 132 pounder Thomas Fierro became a state qualifier for the first time in his career.
Tommy Fierro is having an outstanding season for the Tigers. He currently has a record of 30 wins to just 8 losses. Tommy started the season finishing fourth in a highly competitive weight class up at the Morris Knolls Tournament. He then went on to be the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament runner-up. Tom was an integral part of South Plainfield’s state championship, going undefeated in the playoffs with three falls. Fierro won his first District XIV title which earned him a second seed in the Region 4 Tournament. He won two matches to make it to the final before losing a close 5-2 decision. Being a Region 4 runner-up qualifies him for the State Tournament. Tommy will look to build on his performance and accomplish the goal of being a state place-winner.
Each week the South Plainfield High School Athlete Department will feature an athlete of the week.
