In September 2019, the Borough of South Plainfield, in partnership with American Legion Chaumont Post 243, VFW Post 6763 and Elks Lodge 2298, along with Joe Sacco, proudly implemented the “Hometown Heroes” program.  On Memorial Day weekend, the first phase of the program, banners honoring the fallen were mounted on lampposts along Plainfield Avenue in front of Borough Hall in order to honor and recognize South Plainfield residents who served in the United States military and were killed in combat.

The Hometown Hero program was expanded to include a second phase on July 4 with banners honoring all veterans, whether they are retired, honorably discharged or deceased.  The banners are currently displayed on Hamilton Boulevard and will remain up through Veterans’ Day.

As part of the Phase 2 Hometown Heroes Banner program, the Hometown Heroes Committee will be hosting an outdoor presentation ceremony for honorees family members.

“This ceremony is for the family members of honorees,” said Councilman Derryck White.  “The event will take place August 15, 2020 at 10 a.m. in Monument Park.  It will include a brief ceremony followed by the presentation of a framed 8x10 photo of the banner to the respective honorees’ family.  In addition, personal photos which were used to on the Hometown Heroes Banners will be returned.”

In order to comply with Governor Murphy’s outdoor gathering guidelines, the following will apply:

*Capacity is limited

*Masks or Face covering are recommended

*Social distancing will be exercised

We will announce Phase 3 on November 11, 2020 and release the updated application at that time.  Nominations must be submitted on the Phase 3 application.

“Phase 3 will follow a similar timeline as previously completed Phases, concluding with banners being displayed for the 2021 Memorial Day/July 4th holidays through Veterans Day,” said Committee member Joe Sacco.

“Document requirements included a copy of the DD-214 and a high-quality photo in uniform - the larger the better,” added Bob Bengivenga Sr. of the American League.

The announcement of the third phase of the program will appear in Tapinto South Plainfield, the Observer and on the Borough website.

“In addition, we invite you to visit and ‘like’ the South Plainfield Hometown Heroes Facebook page to view photos and updates,” said White.
