PLAINFIELD’S UNICO ANNOUNCES ITALIAN-AMERICAN MONTHLY MOVIE SERIES AT SOUTH PLAINFIELD PUBLIC LIBRARY

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ---The Plainfields’ Chapter of UNICO today announced that it will be sponsoring a monthly series of Italian and Italian-American movies to be shown—free to the public—at the South Plainfield Library.

The first movie, "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" featuring Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren (1963) will be shown at the South Plainfield Library (2484 Plainfield Avenue) on Thursday, Jan 17 at 6:30 pm. 

All films are FREE to the public. Popcorn will be served. All are welcome to come and also engage on conversation about the movies. Films are scheduled for the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm, (except for November, when it will be the first Thursday) Films are in English or Italian with sub-titles.

“We encourage all to join us for a viewing of classic Italian and Italian-American movies,” said Plainfields’ UNICO President Bob Bengivenga. “Many of these films are award-winning and feature some of the greatest directors, producers, actors and actresses of all-time.”

 

Santi Buscemi, the First Vice President of Plainfields’ UNICO, came up with the concept of the series with Bob Bengivenga, who is also a Trustee at the South Plainfield Library.

 

“We look forward to a discussion with those attending and viewing these thought-provoking period film pieces,” said Santi Buscemi. “We also encourage anyone wishing to learn more about Italian culture or UNICO to come to the library and meet us.”

Jan.  2019  Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow 1963

Dir: Vittorio De Sica; Stars Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni.

The story of three women and the men who fall for them.

Feb. 2019    It’s a Wonderful Life 1946

Dir. Frank Capra; Stars Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed.

The classic Christmas film about a man who finds out what the life of his town would be like if he had never existed. Chosen because of the season and because Capra, an Italian immigrant, was one of the greatest directors of the early decades of American film.

Mar. 2019    Cinema Paradiso 1988

Dir: Giuseppe Tornatore; Stars Philippe Noiret, Enzo Carnavale, and Giuseppe Tornatore.

Recollections of an Italian filmmaker about his childhood in a small Sicilian town where he develops a love for film and for the projectionist at a local cinema.

Apr.  2019   The Leopard (Il Gattopardo) 1963

Dir. Luchino Visconti; Stars Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale, and Alain Delon.

Based on the novel by Giuseppe di Lampedusa, a chronicle of the struggles of a Sicilian aristocrat to maintain his family’s power and position as Garibaldi lands in Sicily and attacks the Bourbon army to launch the war of unification in 1860. .

Dir. Frederico Fellini; Stars Marcello Mastroianni, Anouk Aimée, and Claudia Cardinale. This landmark film explores the memories and fantasies of an Italian film director.

June 2019     Life Is Beautiful 1997

Dir. Roberto Benigni; Stars Roberto Benigni, Giorgio Cantorini, and Nicoletta Broschi.

The story of an Italian Holocaust victim and his family as remembered by his son. Benigni won an Academy Award for acting in this one.

Sept 2019  Il Postino (The Postman) 1994

Dir. Massimo Troisi; Stars Massimo Troisi and Maria Cuncinotta.

A postman falls in love with poetry and uses it as a tool to woe the beautiful woman he loves.     

Oct. 2019    Garden of the Fitzi-Contini 1970

Dir. Vittorio De Sica; Stars Dominque Sanda and Lino Capolicchio.

The story of a wealthy Jewish-Italian family during the Holocaust.

Nov. 2019 Stanno Tutti Bene (They’re All OK) 1990

Dir. Giuseppe Tornatore,; Stars Marcello Mastroiani and Valerie Cavelli.

A widower stands before his wife’s grave and reports that all of their children are OK. But are they? A real tear-jerker.
