Movies Being Shown at the South Plainfield Library in Celebration of Black History Month

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - In celebration of black history month, on Saturday, February 18th at 12:30pm and Saturday February 25th at 1pm the South Plainfield Public Library will be showing 2 movies that deal with the civil rights movement, Freedom Summer and The Witness: From the Balcony of Room 306Freedom Summer will be shown on February 18th.  The film narrates the events of the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer, when more than 700 student activists took segregated Mississippi by storm because of underscored by the systematic exclusion of African Americans from the political process. Robert Parris Moses of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee developed a campaign to bring a thousand volunteers to canvassed for voter registration, creating freedom schools and establishing the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party.

On February 25th The Witness: From the Balcony of Room 306 will be shown. On April 4,1968, the Revered Samuel Billy Kyles stood beside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee and bore witness to his brutal assassination. Through Rev. Kyles recollections of those fateful moments and the days leading up to them, The Witness: From the Balcony of Room 306 helps us remember why Dr. King made that fateful trip to Memphis, and takes us inside the last hours of his life. With moving testimony from civil rights luminaries such as Maxine Smith and Dr. Benjamin Hooks as well as other contemporaries of Dr. King, this movie is a poignant retelling of a crucial turning point in the civil rights movement and a vibrant reminder of Dr. King's impact on the movement and our nation. These movies are presented free and registration is not required.
