On Saturday August 10 at 1:30pm, the South Plainfield Public Library welcomes back vocalist and guitarist Ken Lelen who will perform Big Band Idols. In his Big Band Idols concert Lelen will sing hits by such vocalists as Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, Dinah Shore, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Helen Forrest, Doris Day, Billie Holiday and others who performed in Big Band, society orchestras and jazz combos with Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Les Brown, Vaughn Monroe, Tommy Dorsey and others. Songs may include "Sentimental Journey," "I’m Beginning To See The Light", "I’ll Be Seeing You," "Nearness Of You", "It’s Been A Long, Long Time," "Don’t Get Around Much Anymore" and other radio, juke box and bandstand favorites of the Big Band Era.
Lelen will play vintage acoustic guitars for an authentic, back-in-the-day sound. His guitars make music that’s striking for its character, tone and sustain without using pick-ups or electronic gimmicks. By marrying amusing anecdotes, memorable melodies and charming lyrics, his concerts are a hit for the public. To sign up for the program, contact the South Plainfield Library at 908-754-7885. This program will be held at the South Plainfield Senior Center.
