SOUTH PLAINFIELD - The South Plainfield Library Hosted a “So Long to Summer Celebration” from 6:30p.m. to 8p.m. Wednesday, August 21st on the Willow Park playground in honor of a successful conclusion to their annual Summer Reading Program. With over 30,000 books read over seven weeks, there was cause for celebration. The library treated everyone to Rita’s Italian Ice, games and family fun on the playground.
“We had 905 kids register for the children, tween and teen program this summer,” said Linda Hansen, Library Director. “In all, they read 30,389 books over the course of the seven week independent program!”
In addition to Italian Ice, the celebration included a sidewalk chalk art area, a hula hoop and game corner, and many enjoyed playing in the Willow Park Playground with their friends,” said Hansen. “Everyone had a great time in spite of the oppressively hot weather!”
The summer reading program has been a tradition for years as a way to keep children engaged in learning throughout the summer.
“Our summer reading celebration was a success,” said Jailene Betancourt, Library Assistant in the Children's Department. “I was so happy to see all the kids having fun and enjoying their Rita’s. I can’t wait to do it all over again next year!”
Senior Library Assistant Mija Clemente and the staff helped to organize the event along with Hansen. With a large turnout, they served over 200 cups of Rita’s and the celebration was a successful close for the program.
"I was thrilled to see so many people come out to help celebrate the end of another amazing season at the library,” said Hansen. “I am so proud of all the hard work the staff put in this year - the lovely ladies of the children's department presented an unbelievable 193 programs over the course of the summer! Each day they had several activities planned for a variety of ages, and did such a great job that we had almost 3,500 kids and teens attend those programs. The library is very lucky to have such a hardworking staff.”
The South Plainfield Library staff ask that everyone visit the library’s Facebook page to see upcoming events. The library provides programs for all ages and wants the community to come enjoy all that they offer to enhance the lives of residents.
