Bios, Photos of Past Labor Day Grand Marshals Needed for Eagle Scout Project

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Joseph Kelly, a senior at South Plainfield High School and member of Boy Scout Troop 207, is seeking the community’s help to see his Eagle Scout project come to fruition.

Kelly is looking to compile a ‘wall of fame’ honoring the men and women who have served as honorary grand marshals of the borough’s Labor Day Parade since 1961. The ‘wall of fame’ project, which has received approval by both Boy Scouts of America and the Borough of South Plainfield, will be erected at the municpal building.

“South Plainfield, and our Labor Day Parade, have both been very important parts of my life. I am sure that many of you feel the same,” said Kelly. “These grand marshals are some of the people who have made this town great, and that is why I intend to honor them with this enduring recognition.”

The ‘wall of fame’ will feature photos and bios of each past grand marshal and, in order to complete the project, Kelly is seeking profile and photos submissions from the community.

The profile of the grand marshal should by approximately 125 words and tell the story of the many contributions that person made to the South Plainfield community and why they were chosen. Photos to accompany the profiles should be 5”x7” (or larger) headshots (shoulders and up) and submitted in landscape/horizontal format; portrait/vertical images cannot be used. Ideally, the picture should be just of the honoree and taken around the time they served as grand marshal. If a headshot is not available, the next best option would be a picture of the grand marshal ‘in action’ coaching, volunteering, in the parade, etc. See link below for an example:

“If you yourself are a past grand marshal, or are a family member or close friend of one, I need your help,” said Kelly. “If you are not able to assist with the plaque, but have contact information for any of the people listed and/or their families, I would greatly appreciate it if you could forward it to me.”

Bios and photographs can be sent to or mailed to Joseph Kelly/ Troop 207, 1703 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080.

All Eagle Scout Projects are required to be paid for by fundraising; each plaque will cost approximately $20 and donations to help offset the cost are appreciated but not required. Checks, payable to ‘Troop 207,’ and online donations through are accepted; when using PayPal, please be sure to select ‘send to friend.’

For additional information, including details on the size requirements for photo submissions, email or call  Kelly at (908) 754-5902.

“Please help by submitting a picture and profile that we can use to create the plaque for you or your loved one,” said Kelly.
