SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The Friends of the South Plainfield Public Library will host “A Night Out at Rodolfo’s’ next month. The fundraiser, which will benefit the library, will take place at the Sampton Avenue pizzeria and restaurant from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 26.

“We wanted to hold a fun event for people to go to, enjoy a great meal, and sample some wine,” said Edna Scala, a member of the Friends who, along with her husband Jeff and Friends President Stephanie Bonanno is working alongside Rodolfo’s owner Mike Scotto to organize the event. Rodolfo’s was the perfect place and Mike was more than willing to work with us to make it happen.”

‘A Night Out at Rodolfo’s’ will include a four-course prix fixe menu with choice of appetizer, soup or salad, entrée, and dessert as well as soft drinks for $50 per person with proceeds going directly to the Friends. During the dinner, there will also be a wine tasting with option to purchase bottles, as well as a 50/50 and raffles.

“This is a great event for date night or a girls night out while supporting a good cause,” said Scala.

“I am very grateful to Jeff and Edna [Scala] and to Rodolfo’s for working together for this fundraising event,” said Bonanno. “Without them it wouldn’t be possible.”

The Friends were formed in 1962 with the goal of seeing a free-standing library built in the borough and after seeing that vision become a reality at its current location on Plainfield Avenue three years later turned its efforts towards general support of library services. Several decades passed with the Friends being somewhat defunct but, in the early 1990s, the non-profit saw a rebirth.

Today, the volunteer-run non-profit Friends serve as advocates for the development, expansion and improvement of library collections through advocacy, volunteer services, and fundraising. The goal of the organization is to ‘continue the mission implemented decades ago.’

“We are dedicated to seeing the library remain a vital resource in the community,” Bonanno told TAPinto South Plainfield during a 2017 interview.

To raise funds, the Friends run an annual combined book and bake sale, buy-a-brick and sponsor-a-shelf campaigns, conduct an ongoing Gertrude Hawk candy bar sale, sponsor various raffles throughout the year, and hold special events such as the March 26 Night Out at Rodolfo’s. Additionally, residents can also support the Friends through Unity Bank as well as when they shop at

Proceeds from the organization’s fundraising efforts help fund various library reading celebrations throughout the year as well as the annual Fall Festival program, special adult and children’s events and programs throughout the year, and the the library’s Museum Pass Program. Additionally, the Friends also purchased items to furnish the children’s room.

“We are extremely thankful to the Friends for all they do for the library,” said Linda Hansen, director of the South Plainfield Public Library. “Events like this, and the support from the community members who attend, enable us to provide so much more for our patrons.”

Tickets for the ‘A Night Out at Rodolfo’s’ dinner and wine tasting fundraiser on March 26 are $50 each, cash or check, and can be purchased at the Circulation Desk; checks should be made out to ‘Friends of the South Plainfield Public Library.’
