South Plainfield Girl Scouts Spend Weekend at Camp Lou Henry Hoover

The first day of autumn found the South Plainfield Girl Scout Community traveling to Camp Lou Henry Hoover in Newton, NJ. The Girl Scouts and their Leaders spent the weekend enjoying all that Camp Hoover has to offer, boating, archery, the Challenge Course, hiking and of course everyone’s favorite, making  S’mores.  The Community’s camporee theme this year was “Stem Wars.” “Stem” translates to “science, technology, engineering and math.” Many of the activities the girls had to choose from centered around this theme. On Friday evening the girls worked in groups to create a container to hold a raw egg so it would not break when dropped. On Sunday morning the concluding activity was to drop the containers the girls had created from the roof of the Dining Hall. Assisted by a Camp Hoover staff member, who climbed up onto the roof of the Dining Hall, each of the containers with the raw egg placed inside, was dropped from the edge of the roof. Of the 16 containers designed by the girls, 9 eggs survived the fall. The girls showed great creativity and thought in designing their containers.

Other activities using the Stem theme included exploding art, creating crystal flowers, building a catapult, which was used to launch pinecones, binary coding your name and creating a necklace, and for the younger girls, pinecone bird feeders, mini bow and arrows and chromatography butterfly. The girls also enjoyed a presentation by the South Plainfield Amateur Radio Club (SPARC) where the girls not only learned about ham radios but they were also able to hear other ham radio operators from other places. The day concluded with dinner in the Dining Hall followed by a presentation by “Mr. Electro,” who demonstrated a variety of science theories. The evening concluded with a Camp Fire sing along.

It was a great time for everyone and many of the girls are anxiously waiting for another opportunity to visit Camp Lou Henry Hoover.
