Monroe Township, NJ- On April 21, ten South Plainfield Middle School students had the opportunity to perform with the Central Jersey Music Educators Honors Band.  Many students were nominated to participate in the event and 10 were selected from South Plainfield.  The students who participated were: Emily Wong on Flute, Joseph Cassio on Oboe, Sara DeSimone and Denise Bui on Clarinet, David Amador on Alto Saxophone, Amy Swartz and Kelsie Neidenbach on Horn, and Joel Arias, Gillian DeLaCruz, and Amanda Senatore on Percussion.

After the students were nominated, they were given three challenging pieces for them to learn on their own.  Students had only three rehearsals prior to the event.  On concert day, students arrived first thing in the morning for a full day of rehearsal.  The groups were separated into two ensembles: The Grey Band and the Black Band.  The Black Band was conducted by James Doyle from Roosevelt Intermediate School in Westfield and the Grey Band was conducted by Meg Spatz from the Rahway 7th and 8th Grade Academy.  Students rehearsed intensely for four hours and performed a concert at 2:00pm.

According to Mr. Veiss, the Middle School Band Director, “This is a great opportunity for students to learn from another teacher.  The best way to grow as a musician is to play under many different conductors.”  Mr. Veiss and the entire school community is proud of the efforts of these students and he is looking forward to them doing great things in their future musical careers!
