SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - The Franklin Elementary School PTO held its 20th Annual Tricky Tray on Saturday night at the high school and, as in previous years, the event attracted a sold out crowd and raised a little over $35,000 for the school.

Tickets for the fundraiser went on sale in Feb. 17 and within a week all 550 tickets had been sold. “I am amazed every year,” said PTO President Georgia Lambert, noting that this year, tickets were first made available to Franklin School families and that the number of tickets sold wasn’t increased in an effort to avoid overcrowding.

In the months leading up to the March 21 event, members of the PTO spent countless hours shopping for the latest and most coveted items while others went door-to-door seeking donations, receiving an outpouring of support in the form of services, gift certificates and products from local and nearby business.

“We absolutely want to thank everyone who donated. Without them, this event would not be possible,” said Lambert. “I encourage all residents to support all the business who support them. Without them we wouldn’t be able to hold this event.”

Close to 400 items were raffled off throughout the evening with prizes ranging from patio furniture and housewares, high-end electronics and designer purses, sports memorabilia and jewelry, and gift certificates and baskets, among other things. In addition, there were door prizes, a calendar raffle and a successful 50/50 raffle garnered one lucky winner a take home prize of $1,840.

“I would thank to thank all the teachers, staff, Principal Errico and the volunteers. Without any of them, this event would not happen,” said Lambert at the start of the fundraiser, adding, “The PTO board members are awesome this year and make this event possible.”

Proceeds from the annual Tricky Tray is used by the Franklin PTO to purchase much-needed items for the school and offset the cost of special school-wide assemblies and other special events. In recent years, the money raised at the event has been used to purchase Chromebooks, SMART Boards, books and playground equipment. Additionally, money from 2013’s Tricky Tray enabled the school to update its electrical and install air conditioning in classrooms that were not equipped.

According to Lambert, the PTO board will be meeting April 13 to discuss how the proceeds from this year’s event will be used. “We will be meeting to figure it out but, as always, it will be used to benefit the students of Franklin,” she said.
