SOUTH PLAINFIELD - The Roosevelt Elementary School Gym was transformed into a lively, aerobic dance party as over 70 individuals partook in the South Plainfield High School Music Department’s Zumbathon on March 15th. Led by professional Zumba Instructors from Zumba Fitness for 1½ hours, participants experienced the unique Latin American inspired style of dance, fitness and fun.
“The South Plainfield Music Booster Zumbathon was our first event of its kind and I am happy to say that it was a huge success,” said Dr. Donna Kregler, Director of Choral Activities. “Students, staff, adults, friends, family, all had a great time, exercised, and had fun!”
The fundraiser was held to raise money for scholarships, the SPHS Music Boosters end-of-the-year banquet, trips, and equipment.
“We’re so grateful to be part of a great cause for the Music Department and for South Plainfield,” said Zumba Instructor Amy Wilkerson. “We’re happy to be able to help them raise money for their programs.”
Students, parents and teachers worked up a sweat to the unique form of fitness dance. From hip-hop to samba, Zumba instructors incorporated a full body workout while enabling everyone to enjoy the experience.
“Our goal is to just make sure people are having fun and working out the same time, but feeling that freedom and just loving life,” added Wilkerson. “I tell people, leave your problems outside that door and if you choose to pick them up on the way out, you can, but the next hour and a half is your freedom and your time to just embrace life, love it and just love yourself.
Several vendors took part in the event including Scentsy, POSH, and ID Life. Give aways, prizes and raffles topped off the evening.
“I want to thank the Music Booster parents and the four instructors for sharing their time with us and helping us raise funds for the end-of-the-year banquet and scholarships,” said Kregler. “The students came in the next day excited for the next one and told their friends how much fun it was! I am looking forward to hosting another Zumbathon in the near future!”
Several fundraisers are in the works for the SPHS Music Department. A Panera Bread Fundraiser is scheduled for April 19th from 4pm-8pm. A portion of the evening proceeds of purchases from their South Plainfield location will go to the Music Boosters. For anyone wishing to attend the upcoming performance, the SPHS Spring Concert is scheduled for April 25th at 6:30pm in the high school auditorium.
