SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Thomas Cassio, a sitting member of the South Plainfield Board of Education (SPBOE) and its current vice president, was recently named an ‘Outstanding Board Member’ by the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA).

“I am humbled and honored to not only be recommended but chosen for this honor,” Cassio told TAPinto South Plainfield.

January is School Board Member Recognition Month in New Jersey, and, in an effort to ‘informally honor’ those who ‘contribute to their communities’ beyond the board of education, NJSBA sought recommendations from districts throughout the state.

“We all know that school board members are dedicated volunteers, but many are committed to service that is not limited to the board of education,” stated NJSBA in their email seeking recommendations, noting it was ‘not a contest, but [rather] a celebration of the spirit of service.’ “The New Jersey School Boards Association would like to acknowledge board members who go the extra mile, by giving their time and talent to other organizations in addition to their service to the board.”

Recommendations for ‘outstanding’ board members were due to NJSBA by mid-December and required a short description – no more than 500 words – with specific and concrete examples of how the individual benefits the community. Cassio’s recommendation came from SPBOE President Doug Chapman.

“When looking for a board of education member who gives well beyond the duties of the board, look no further than Tom Cassio…[His] dedication to the community is not solely related to the board of education,” stated Chapman in his recommendation, noting Cassio’s community contributions, including his involvement with the South Plainfield Junior Baseball League for over a decade and how, as co-owner of Twin City Pharmacy and Surgical Supply, is ‘constantly giving back to the community through donations of money, supplies and services.’

“Tommy has selflessly given of himself to the South Plainfield community and totally exemplifies the qualities you have outlined for this recognition,” stated Chapman.

As a member of the SPBOE, Cassio is serving his second consecutive year as vice president and is also chair of the board’s finance and shared service committees as well as a member of its buildings and grounds, curriculum, and public relations committees. He also serves as the board’s traffic safety liaison.

At the Jan. 15 SPBOE meeting, fellow members extended their congratulations to Cassio.

'Congratulations Tom on your appointment for board member of the year," said Debbie Boyle.

“Tommy, thank you for everything you do for the kids in this district,” said Keith Both.

Pio Pennisi said, “You do a lot Tommy… Congratulations, that is a real big honor.”

Stephanie Wolak added, “I have known Tommy for a long, long time [and] he really does put a lot out there for all the kids. We appreciate it.”

As an ‘outstanding board member,’ Cassio’s profile will be featured in an upcoming edition of weekly publication School Board Notes.

“I want to thank Board President Chapman for thinking of me,” Cassio told TAPinto, adding, “Recognition is not why I do what I do and so many others, including friends and family, help along the way. I truly enjoy giving back to the community. I was born and raised here and just want to help make a difference.”
