SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – South Plainfield High School will stream its pre-recorded Senior Scholarship Virtual Presentation on Thursday, June 10 at 7 p.m. At that time, dozens of members of the Class of 2021 will be recognized, including four student-athletes who will receive monetary scholarships from TAPinto South Plainfield.
As in previous years, an athletic awards committee was charged with selecting one male and one female student for both the GMC Sportsmanship Award and the GMC Scholar-Athlete Award. This year, TAPinto will present $250 awards to GMC Sportsmanship Award recipients Joshua Bradley and Courtney Nagy and GMC Scholar-Athlete Award recipients Hailey Palmer and Anthony White.
GMC Sportsmanship Award Recipients
To be eligible for the GMC Sportsmanship Award, one must have a GPA over 3.25 and be a well-rounded student who demonstrated sportsmanship in school and the community.
Joshua Bradley, who plans to attend Rutgers University – New Brunswick in the fall, garnered an 1100 on the SAT and, with a 3.9 GPA is currently ranked 29th in his class.
Bradley is president of the Class of 2021, a member of the Spanish National Honor Society, Heroes and Cool Kids, and Teen Pep as well as the toy drive committee, Yearbook Club, Jerseyans History Club, and Environmental Science Club. In November 2020, he was named the Edison Rotary Club's 'Student of the Month.'
On the athletic front, Bradley served as captain of the Varsity Basketball Team his junior and senior year, earning a varsity letter in 2020. During his junior year, he was named 'Varsity Basketball Rookie of the Year,' and was a member of the Blue Division All GMC Hustle Team. Additionally, during the 2021 season, the team won the Blue Division with one of its best records since the 2006-2007 school year.
Courtney Nagy has a 3.54 GPA and plans to attend the College of New Jersey in the fall. During her high school career, she was the recipient of gold cards and named to high honor roll and honor. Nagy was enrolled in AP psychology and AP economics courses as well as honors biology, honors chemistry, and honors English.
Nagy was a member of and captain of both the soccer and lacrosse teams; she served on the soccer team all four years and was a member of the lacrosse team her sophomore, junior and senior years. She has been the recipient of the Hunterton Award and was named Defender of the Year and Rookie of the Year.
Outside the classroom, Nagy has volunteered with the South Plainfield Senior Center's Meals on Wheels program as well as painting and craft classes. She has also dedicated her time to Our Lady of Czestochowa, volunteering at the annual Feast of St. Anthony, preparing and selling Polish foods, and assisting at Rotary dinners. Additionally, Nagy is a member of the South Plainfield Juniorettes.
GMC Scholar-Athlete Award Recipients
To be eligible for the GMC Scholar-Athlete Award, one must be well- rounded in both academics and athletics and have a GPA of 3.25 with overall athletic background, including awards and honors received throughout their high school career, also taken into consideration.
Hailey Palmer, with a 4.3567 GPA, is currently ranked 11th in her class and plans to attend Rider University in the fall. During the course of her high school career, she earned the President's Award for Educational Excellence, was an AP Scholar with Honors, and a Gold Card recipient as well as a member of both the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. She served as treasurer of the Class of 2021 for three years and was also involved with the Juniorettes, Environmental Science Club, Heroes and Cool Kids, Tiger RAK (Random Acts of Kindness), the Student Climate and Culture Committee, Passionately Pink Club, Mental Health Awareness Club, and Jerseyans History Club.
Palmer was member of the Fall Cheer Team for three years, earning the recognition of 'Cheerleader of the Week' in 2020, and was involved with Winter Track from 2017-2021, serving as captain (2019 and 2020). As a member of Winter Track, she was named 'Rookie of the Year' (9th grade), and, during her sophomore and senior years, was named Athlete of the Week, All Blue Division, and received the MVP Award. Additionally, Palmer personally broke records in both the 55m dash and indoor 400m dash while also breaking her own school record in the 300m dash.
As a member of the Spring Track Team for all four years, Palmer garnered the title of 'Rookie of Year' (2018); All Blue Division (2018 and 2019); All Conference – 400m Dash (2019); and Sprinter of the Year (2019). She also broke school Spring Track records in the 4x100m relay, 4x200m relay, spring medley relay, and the Swedish spring medley relay.
Palmer is also the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association's Scholar Athlete.
Anthony White, who scored a 1240 on the SAT and holds a 3.5 GPA, will attend Rutgers University in the fall. Over the course of his high school career, he was named to the honor and served as a member of Heroes and Cool Kids.
White was a member of the South Plainfield High School Wrestling Team for four years, garnering the recognition of both GMC Champion and District Champion in 2018, 2019, and 2020. He was also named Region Champion in 2019 and 2020 and the NJSIAA Place Winner (4th) in 2020 as well as Freshman of the Year (2018), Sophomore of the Year (2019), and Junior of the Year (2020), Additionally, White is a three-time All Division and three-time All-Conference winner and, during his tenure, the Tigers were named 2018 Group 3 Champions; 2019 Group 2 Champions; and the 2018 and 2019 GMC Champions.
