SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – It's been nearly three years since residents who stick around the borough on Memorial Day Weekend have had the opportunity to kick off the unofficial start of summer at the South Plainfield Community Pool. But, the 'wade' is officially over with the Maple Avenue facility set to open for the 2021 season on Saturday, May 29.

‘The recreation staff have been working hard behind the scenes to get ready for this summer, and we are all excited to officially kick off our first full season at the new and improved South Plainfield Community Pool," said Elizabeth Yarus, the department's director.

The summer hangout last opened for a complete season in 2018; the following year, the pool was closed for major renovations and, in 2020, construction and COVID-related delays resulted in a mid-August opening and shortened season.

"We are excited to welcome pool members and guests and look forward to a fun summer," said Yarus.

The new, state-of-the-art facility features a functional leisure pool complete with zero-depth entry and handicap ramp, a tall dumping and spray water feature, a vortex/whirlpool feature, in-water seating around three sides, and an in-pool shade area. The 7-foot section features wider and more regulated lap lanes as well as a multipurpose activity zone with two, 12-foot rock climbing walls and two slides, including the pre-existing tube slide and a new flume slide. Additionally, the wading (kiddie) pool, which was not complete last summer, is now fully operation with zero-depth entry and a splashpad spray area with a slide.

Enhancements have also been made around the pool deck; six sunshades have been erected; lawn chairs, available on a first-come, first served non-reservation basis, are laid out; and turf has replaced the sand temporarily put down last year. In addition to the aforementioned renovations to and around the pool, the complex itself has also seen a facelift. There are two new tetherball courts, fencing separating the pool and the playground has been removed; and access in and out of the facility has been reconfigured.

Additionally, in 2020, the pool house was fully renovated and now includes an ADA-compliant family restroom off the pool deck and expanded men's and women's washrooms with ADA-compliant showers, automatic no-touch toilets, sinks, and hand dryers, and additional changing and baby-changing stations.

We hope residents enjoy the new upgrades and amenities that the pool has to offer," Yarus said, adding, "Our management team and staff will be ready to greet you with a smile."
