SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Mayor Matt Anesh and the Borough Council recognized the individual accomplishments of the high schools wrestlers and the team’s 2019 Group III State Championship win at a meeting June 17. Additionally, the mayor officially proclaimed June 2019 as ‘South Plainfield High School Wrestling Month’ in the borough.

“South Plainfield High School wrestling students have compiled an array of team accomplishments…These students achievements in wrestling have been numerous and commendable and their commitment to the sport is reflected in their steady, persistent progress through much practice and competition,” stated the mayor’s proclamation. “The Borough of South Plainfield…is proud to have these students as part of this community and they exemplify the values that make a community strong and proud…”

The coaches of the SPHS High School Wrestling Team were also on hand for the meeting and called each member up by name to receive their proclamation. “We would just like to thank everyone for their support, and for the support over the last four years for us seniors, in helping us accomplish all of our goals inside and outside of the ring. Thank you very much,” Joe Sacco, a member of South Plainfield High School’s Class of 2019, said.

According to the mayor’s proclamation, ‘wrestling is mankind’s oldest and most basic form of recreational combat, traces its origins back to the ‘dawn of civilization through carvings and drawings estimated to be between 15,000 and 20,000 years old; with ‘wrestling the most popular event in ancient Greece Games and lists of Olympic wrestling winners recorded since 708 B.C.’ “Modern wrestling is highly instinctive sport that requires strength, alertness, resiliency, and, above all, agility and quickness,” stated the mayor.

Anesh added that when people find out he is from the borough, the first question they usually ask has to do with wrestling. “They want to know how you guys do it. My answer is always I don’t know. I wouldn't last 30 seconds,” the mayor joked, adding, “You the envy of the wrestling community.”
