SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Construction of the new South Plainfield Community Pool is continuing, with efforts being made to ensure work is completed as soon as possible. As of press time, however, borough officials state that the initial and anticipated July 15 opening will be delayed.
“Construction on pools of this scale is always a challenge and, like everything else in 2020, the challenges have been compounded and that has things running behind,” Council President Christine Faustini, chair of the borough’s recreation committee, told TAPinto South Plainfield. “Although we drove hard and optimistically targeted a July 15 opening, that is apparently no longer possible. While this message may be disappointing, the community deserves upfront information as the situation changes.”
According to Glenn Cullen, administrator/CFO for the Borough of South Plainfield, the new slide has been installed; the liner is scheduled to be completed this week; and over 50-percent of the decking has been poured with this part of project continuing daily. The final work for the waterlines and around the baby pool is also under way.
“We are taking it week by week,” Cullen said. “Over the last week, we have had a lot of accomplishments but there is still a lot that needs to be done.”
As a result of the delayed reopening, the borough will be amending its membership options for the 2020 season. At a virtual meeting last month, the South Plainfield Borough Council unanimously approved amended rates for the 2020 season with Pool Saver Passes initially scheduled to go on sale June 29 through Community Pass.
Due to the project delays and an undetermined opening date, however, the borough will instead move forward with a modified daily rate structure. Daily Pass rates are scheduled to be adjusted at the borough council’s July 13 meeting.
“We have decided to move away from the saver passes due to the delay and out of precaution,” said Cullen. “We are optimistic, provided the state continues to reopen as planned and the governor doesn’t scale back on the opening of things, that residents will be able to utilize the facility this summer."
According to Faustini, the borough will continue to keep the public informed as the ‘construction intensely continues.’ “We have the best people in the borough overseeing the project [and] we hope to salvage part of the summer for our residents to enjoy time poolside,” she said.
“Regardless of when we have the opening day, what is certain is that South Plainfield will have an amazing, upgraded, and best in class community pool for many, many years to come,” added Faustini.
