SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ –The South Plainfield Department of Recreation is currently accepting applications for summer seasonal employment. Positions are available at the Community Pool and with the department’s Summer Parks program. 

“South Plainfield prides itself on supporting its own community, and we want to continue that by providing our employees the opportunity to work close to home and in their neighborhood,” said Elizabeth Yarus, the borough’s recreation director. “Summer jobs with the recreation department are also great stepping stones.”

Currently, the borough is looking to hire a head manager and assistant manager at the pool as well as certified lifeguards and non-certified pool staff and counselors to run the Summer Parks program taking place this year from the end of June through the end of July at the PAL and Roosevelt Elementary School.

Lifeguards must be over the age of 15 and have received American Red Cross certification, including LG, CPR, AED, and first aid. The assistant manager must be at least 20 years old, hold the aforementioned certifications, and a minimum of two years related experience. The head manager must be at least 24 years old and hold the aforementioned certifications along with Aquatic Supervisor experience. Lifeguard Instructor Certification is also preferred. 

Numerous non-certified pool positions as well as camp counselor positions are also available. Residents age 15 years and older needed at the pool to run the front gate, concessions, slides, and perform other miscellaneous duties. At the Summer Parks program, counselors over the age of 15 are needed to facilitate the five-week week program from the end of June through the end of July at both the PAL and Roosevelt Elementary School. Additionallya head counselor is also needed with eligible candidates required to hold a teaching certification. 

“These jobs offer our youth the convenience and flexibility to work in their neighborhood,” said Yarus, noting that a job at the pool or as a camp counselor provides the opportunity to work with families and children, gain customer service experience, and learn to deal with challenging situations that require them to think quickly on their feet. "These are all things that can be used in future endeavors," said the director.
