SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The South Plainfield Department of Recreation, in association with the US Sports Institute (USSI), will be offering a new Multi-Sport Program this spring. The eight-week program, taking place on Saturdays from April through June, is designed to provide children of all ability levels between the age of 2 and 7 years old the opportunity to try a variety of sports.
“We have been looking to bring new programs to the borough and expand our offerings,” said Elizabeth Yarus, the borough’s director of the recreation, telling TAPinto South Plainfield that the program ‘is a little different’ than what has been offered in the past.
“We are expanding our offerings so now we have something for younger children as well. This program is specifically designed for children ages 2 to 7 and will be run by trained, professional instructors from the US Sports Institute as opposed to parent volunteer coaches,” she said.
Set to take place on the PAL’s turf field, the multi-sport program will provide children with the chance to try soccer, basketball, flag football, cricket, with each session including skills and drills as well as games. Additionally, all age-appropriate equipment will be provided by US Sports Institute.
The spring multi-sport program will consist of three different age-appropriate options, each taking place on Saturdays from April 18 through June 13, as follows: Senior Multi-Sport for children ages 5 to 7 will run from 2 to 3 p.m.; Squirts Multi-Sport for children ages 3 to 5 will run from 3 to 4 p.m.; and Parent & Me Multi-Sport for children ages 2 to 3 and a parent/caregiver taking place from 4 to 5 p.m.
The cost for each session is $162 and each player will receive a T-shirt. Registration is currently under way. Residents looking to register and pay online using a credit card or e-check can do so through Community Pass (https://bit.ly/2JpGLO2); borough residents seeking to register and pay in person, either with cash, check or credit card, can do so Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please note: first time registrations will have to visit the PAL office to provide proof of residency (utility or mortgage bill, driver’s license, etc.) and child’s birth certificate. Additionally, any resident who has trouble registering or receives a ‘not eligible’ message when trying to register themselves and/or a family member should contact the department at (908) 226-7713.
