SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The community’s generosity during the holiday season spanned to borough hall where Mayor Matthew Anesh’s office overflowed with donations in support of South Plainfield’s 7th annual Toys for Tots campaign.

“None of this would be possible without the outpouring of support from our community, its residents, organizations, and businesses,” said Mayor Anesh. “We are honored to assist the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and sponsor this annual fundraising initiative."

Donations of new and unwrapped toys began pouring in around early November and, on the morning of Dec. 13, a South Plainfield Department of Public Works trucked rolled out of borough hall filled to capacity and headed to the Marine Corps League collection site, the old DMV building in South Plainfield. This year’s collection, which included more than 1000 items packed in large boxes and South Plainfield leaf bags, included stuffed animals, Legos, infant toys, arts and crafts, Barbie dolls, and more.

“We got a great deal of donations this year despite many other great charitable initiatives taking place simultaneously,” said the mayor’s secretary Anne Daley, adding that the fundraising initiative holds a special place in her heart because her husband, Tom, is a retired Marine. "This was one of our biggest years," said Daley.

The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community. According to representatives of Toys for Tots, South Plainfield’s donations will be distributed to needy families in Middlesex, Somerset, and Hunterdon counties.

“It is a great cause, and I am happy South Plainfield was able to once again play a small part in making the 2019 campaign successful,” added Anesh. “South Plainfield always comes together to help others.”
