EDISON, NJ – In a show of support for the Class of 2020, residents and staff at JFK Hartwyck at Oak Tree, a division of Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH), are celebrating high school and college seniors through the New Jersey Hospital Association’s #Seniors4Seniors2020 social media campaign.
The initiative, according to a press release from the association, is intended to ‘help counteract the preponderance of distressing news in a difficult time’ and ‘show the creative and vibrant side of nursing homes, assisted living residences, and other facilities that are home to senior citizens’ while also aiming to ‘engage a new group – area schools – to see and share caring messages on social media.’
“We wanted to let our graduating high school and college seniors know we are thinking of them and extend well-wishes,” said Catherine M. Wolpin, B.S., C.T.R.S., CDP, director of therapeutic recreation for HMH JFK Hartwyck at Oak Tree. “For our seniors it was a way for them to congratulate local graduating seniors.”
For the campaign, residents at Oak Tree worked with the therapeutic recreation department staff to show their support to the Class of 2020 in area high schools and colleges whose final semester of school – and perhaps other events like prom, graduation and sports – have been disrupted.
At Oak Tree, a congratulatory video was created and streamed on social media sites, including Facebook and Twitter. Residents helped design the video’s PowerPoint and also included personal well-wishes and advice to students from Edison’s John P. Stevens High School and Metuchen High School, including those who have volunteered at the facility for several years. Additionally, one resident was also able to congratulate her first-born grandchild who is a senior at Rahway High School.
“The video was a way for our local seniors to know that our residents are thinking of them and feel for them during this time. The residents recognize all the things the students are missing out on,” said Wolpin, noting that working on the video also gave the seniors something to do during this difficult time. “Here, our residents are engaged in variety of leisure pursuits each day, but working on this video tribute filled up some of their free time with something, fun, different, and outside of themselves.”
