SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The Pink SOCS Foundation, in conjunction with the Mayor’s Wellness Council, will hold a 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, June 8. The 3.1 mile fundraising and awareness event will kick off at Spring Lake Park and make its way past the high school and through the community, concluding back at the park. Proceeds will benefit New Jersey residents affected with breast and other types of cancer.

“A 5K is more appealing for the average person who may not be an avid runner and a great event for runners and walkers of all ages and abilities to participate,” said Christine Dispenziere, a founder of the South Plainfield-based Pink SOCS Foundation – Sisters of Cancer Survivors. “We are hoping residents and families with kids will come out, run or walk, and show those affected by cancer that the community is behind them and here to support them.”

Established by Dispenziere and her siblings in 2008, the Pink SOCS Foundation is a family-run 501(c)3 dedicated to assisting New Jersey residents affected by any type of cancer. While large non-profit organizations such as the Avon Walk, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and American Cancer Society are dedicated to raising funds to help hospitals and support cancer research, the Pink SOCS Foundation is committed to helping residents of the Garden State.

Over the past decade, the foundation, which is run completely by volunteers, has worked to donate funds directly to New Jersey individuals and families affected by breast and other types of cancer. Whether it’s money toward paying a bill, the purchase of a wig or a mastectomy bra, a gift card to go out to dinner or a gift basket to brighten someone’s day, the Pink SOCS Foundation is available to help. Additionally, the foundation also awards scholarships each year to a graduating senior from both South Plainfield High School and Clark High School.

To raise the necessary funds to assist Garden State residents, the Pink SOCS hold numerous fundraisers throughout the year, including a golf outing, night at the races, and, for the past decade, a 39-minute Walk for a Cure at Riley Elementary School where Dispenziere is a fourth grade teacher; this year’s walk will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, May 24. This is the first year the Pink SOCS Foundation is holding a 5K run/walk and, Dispenziere is looking forward to getting everyone out.

“This is a great way to get people out and promote good health and wellness in the community while raising money and awareness for the foundation and those affected by cancer,” Dispenziere said, noting that, over the years, South Plainfield residents, along with Mayor Matt Anesh and the Borough Council, have supported the organization and its mission.

During October, the foundation is recognized with a proclamation in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and, over the years, the mayor has donated proceeds from marriage fees to the non-profit.

“South Plainfield has been so supportive of Pinks SOCS throughout the years and we are honored to be holding this event on the same day the Mayor’s Wellness Council is hosting their spring wellness fair,” said Dispenziere. “Come out and show your support and be the silver lining in the cloud those affected by cancer are underneath.”
