SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Teacher and children’s author Lisa Mullarkey stopped by John F. Kennedy Elementary School on April 18.

“This year’s guest author was very well received by our students and staff. Mrs. Mullarkey spent the day motivating our students to be future writers," said Kennedy Principal Kevin Hajduk. "It was a privilege for our students at Kennedy School to meet someone who has published multiple children’s books and learn from her what it takes to become a successful writer."

Mullarkey, is the author of more than 100 books for children n kindergarten through fifth grade including but not limited to, the Farmyard Friends easy reader series, the TJ Trapper Bully Zapper series, the Pony Girl Series, the Storm Cliff Stables series, the Time Travel Series, and the Katharine the Almost Great series. She also has penned several adaptions of numerous classics, including Oliver TwistA Christmas Carol, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, to name a fewwritten a beach activities book for kids entitled Splashing by the Shore; and is the author behind numerous non-fiction books about cheerleading.

“You don't have to write an actual book to become an author,” Mullarkey told the third and fourth graders gathered for her presentation. “Everybody has a different type of writing that they like to do. Don’t limit yourself by thinking ‘I have to write a book.’ There are so many other things you can do, from jokes, to poems, to even screenplays.”

During her visit to Kennedy, Mullarkey held four different presentations, each one focusing on different age-appropriate topics, including but not limited to, why she became an author, the ‘many rejections’ she received along her journey, and where her book ideas and characters come from.

"Mrs. Mullarkey also explained her multiple setbacks relating to writing books. These setbacks were comparable to what some students experience in school with writing," Hajduk said, adding, "In the end, it taught our students that they can also be successful writers even when they have setbacks with writing in their lives.”

Mullarkey's presentations also provided Kennedy students the opportunity to take part in different interactive activities and ask questions. Additionally, the author  took time to autograph preordered copies of her books and also held a question and answer session with some lucky raffle contest winners.

A resident of Hillsborough, has been teaching for 25 years. She is a former school librarian and currently a first grade teacher in South Brunswick. “I started writing about 20 years ago and love being an author, but, honestly, I love teaching even more,” Mullarkey told TAPinto South Plainfield, adding, “Teaching is what really fills my heart.”
