NEW BRUNSWICK - Rutgers police are investigating a lunchtime robbery on Tuesday in front of Campbell Hall, 617 George St., on the College Avenue campus, which involved two young children and a trip to a Somerset Street bank.
The victim, who is affiliated with Rutgers University, reported that he was walking near Campbell Hall dorm at 12:30 p.m. when a vehicle, described as a dark colored Toyota Highlander, pulled up next to him and the driver requested money for gas, police said.
As the victim retrieved cash from his wallet he observed a handgun on the lap of the driver who then told him to get into the vehicle, which was also occupied by an adult female and two young girls in the backseat.
The victim then got into the vehicle and was subsequently driven to a PNC Bank located at 112 Somerset Street. The victim exited the vehicle, walked into the bank alone where he withdrew cash, and then walked back to the waiting vehicle where he turned over the money, police said.
The perpetrator then drove the victim back to the river dorms and fled in a direction away from campus. The victim was not physically injured, police said.
The perpetrator is described as a Middle-Eastern male, approximately 40 years of age, having a full black beard, short black hair, and wearing a short sleeved t-shirt with khaki pants. The perpetrator was accompanied by a female wearing a purple dress and head covering as well as two girls, approximately three to four years old years old, police said.
