SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Over the past four months, the McCriskin-Gustafson Family of Funeral Homes has been working to meet the community’s needs while, at the same time, adjusting to the ever-changing guidelines set forth by the state as a result of the current health care crisis.

“We are working to facilitate and provide services for families and doing it very delicately,” said Rick McCriskin, co-owner and vice president of the family-owned and operated funeral homes located in South Plainfield, Middlesex, and Piscataway. “We follow the current executive orders while, at the same time, continue to provide the level of service we are known for.”

When the COVID-19 crisis first hit New Jersey back in March, funeral homes were left to follow state guidelines with strict restrictions in place on the number allowed at indoor gatherings. At that time, visitation was limited to immediate family only, with that number increasing to no more than 10 people in the weeks that followed. As a result, many turned to live-stream services.

Last month, however, under Executive Order #152, the number allowed at indoor gatherings was increased to 100 people or 25-percent of a room's capacity – whichever number is lower. According to McCriskin, based on the size of the four funeral homes, that number stands at around 50 people allowed during the length of visitation. All four funeral homes are also following social distancing guidelines, with seating spaced apart and face coverings required at all time.

“We are required to follow the executive orders and, as things change, we are working to adapt,” McCriskin said. “As restrictions are lessened, we are able to return to our traditional visitation sessions.”
