SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The Babe Ruth International Baseball and Softball League (baberuthleague.org) last week named Ralph Errico, principal of Franklin Elementary School in South Plainfield and president of the Edison Board of Education, as its Mid-Atlantic Regional Commissioner. In this capacity, Errico will also serve on the league’s board of directors.
“I am proud to be nominated by my fellow state commissioners and obviously proud to be elected as commissioner,” Errico told TAPinto South Plainfield. “I can’t wait until everything currently going on passes and we can back to getting down and dirty and back to playing baseball and softball.”
The Babe Ruth League’s Mid-Atlantic Region includes all of New Jersey as well as New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. Earlier this month, nominations were sent to the league’s president/CEO with a minimum of nine votes from the 16-member board required.
As commissioner, Errico will oversee everything that goes on within the Mid-Atlantic Region, which includes baseball and softball leagues and regional competitions for children ages 5 to 18 years old from the five aforementioned states. Additionally, as a member of the board of directors, he will work to set policy and rules for Babe Ruth International, which covers leagues throughout the country and in other parts of the world.
Errico began volunteering with the Babe Ruth League in 1989 as a coach and, over the years, moved up the ranks, serving as a manager and board member of the Edison Angels Softball League. He took on the role of League President in 1992 and, in 1996, was elected a District Commissioner. In 1999, Errico joined the board of the Edison Boys Baseball organization and, the following year, was appointed as an Assistant Northern NJ (NNJ) State Commissioner.
For the past 14 years, Errico has been serving as a State Commissioner of Northern NJ and has served as Assistant Middle Atlantic Region Commissioner in charge of softball as well as a NNJ State Commissioner for Babe Ruth and Cal Ripken Baseball and Babe Ruth Softball. He has also served as Regional Tournament Director for numerous Babe Ruth Baseball, Cal Ripken Baseball, and Babe Ruth Softball tournaments and is a Babe Ruth League Softball World Series Task Force Member.
In July 2018, Errico was inducted into the Middle Atlantic Region of Babe Ruth League Hall of Fame following a nomination from Assistant State Baseball Commissioner Tony Tortora of North Arlington. Additionally, he served as a high school softball coach while working as math teacher in Edison.
“I like baseball; I like softball. I grew up playing baseball and was a coach when I taught,” Errico told TAPinto back in 2018. “Even before I had kids, I was coaching and involved with the league…I enjoy watching the kids play, maybe because I am a big kid. That’s also why I love being a principal in an elementary school.”
