SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - Traveling in Alaska is like traveling in no other place on earth. Alaska has its own time zone. It is four hours earlier than the East Coast of the United States, one hour earlier than the West Coast of the United States. You can explore Alaska by cruise ship, air or driving.  Once there you can take the Alaska Railroad to discover the beauty and what Alaska has to offer.

Explore the cities of Alaska like: Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city lies between the mountains and the sea and yet is no stranger to the wilderness. Among the northernmost cities on Earth, Anchorage is a place with big-city amenities: fine restaurants, museums, theaters and an excellent music scene.  Fairbanks is Alaska’s second-largest city which is the   hub of the Interior, Gateway to the Bush and the Golden Heart City. Juneau is Alaska’s state capital which is located between Mount Juneau, Mount Roberts and Gastineau Channel. Ketchikan is known as Alaska’s “first city” due to its location at the southern tip of the Inside Passage. The city is backed by forested slopes and distinctively shaped Deer Mountain. It faces Tongass Narrows, a waterway humming with floatplanes, fishing boats, ferries and barges hauling freight to other Inside Passage ports.

Wildlife in Alaska is abundant and diverse with brown bear, black bear, polar bear, caribou, moose and more. Alaska is the Last Frontier for animals as well as people. Visit Denali National Park to view the wildlife or drive the Alaska Highway which has been called the haven for wildlife.

See the  Majestic glaciers like Mendenhall Glacier which is located 12 miles outside of Juneau or the
Hubbard Glacier which is the biggest glacier visited by cruise ships. Glacier Bay is where cruise ships spend most of the day visiting several tidewater glaciers and explore the inlets which are carved by ice. Fifty miles southeast of Juneau is a long, narrow fjord leading to the North and South Sawyer Glaciers. Tracy Arm is a fjord in Alaska near Juneau.

Ride the Alaska Railroad through some of Alaska’s most spectacular scenery. The Alaska Railroad is truly the perfect way to explore Alaska. Travel past the tallest peak in North America on the Denali Star Route with service between Anchorage, Talkeetna, Denali National Park and Fairbanks. Or head south from Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad for spectacular sites in the dome cars on the Coastal Classic to Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park, or to Whittier and the Prince William Sound.

Other Things to Do in Alaska

Visit all the spectacular sites with tours to every part of Alaska from visiting the big cities to far away
places like Nome or Barrow. Take a tour to see the pipeline and Arctic Circle. See the Northern Lights,
Denali National Park, Seward Highway tour, gold mining, Denali helicopter and much more.

                                                                  TIP OF THE WEEK

                                                         TELEPHONE TRAVEL SCAMS

Telephone travel scams are abundant these days calling about free trips, cruises or hotels. Scam artists will
request you to press a number on your phone to be connected to an operator. DO NOT PRESS THAT NUMBER as it will lead to your telephone number being used for all sorts of information and other scams. Once you press that number the caller on the other end knows that that number is a working number. They have the option to sell your number to the highest bidder for other advertising or to use your telephone number to make calls outside the United States.

For those who do decide to press the number the a caller will ask for your credit card number, telling you it is just to hold your reservation, and a charge will be placed on your credit card for about $2000.00 or more.  BEWARE as nothing is free.

The Unquiet Grave by Sharyn McCrumb

The Unquiet Grave by Sharyn McCrumb (Atria Books, 2017)

Sharyn McCrumb is, quite simply, an American gem, and one of my favorite authors. From her books set in Appalachia with strange characters who remind us of our pioneer past, to St. Dale, a masterpiece about the legendary car racer, Dale Earnhardt in McCrumb's NASCAR series, McCrumb's poetic language and attention to ...
