8 Spring Cleaning Steps To A Beautiful Bedroom Closet

Springtime's here---Time to give your bedroom closet a good clean-out!

Springtime’s here (at least calendar-wise), and looking around your cluttered home, you may feel the urge to purge. Where to begin? Why not your bedroom closet? Whether you need to tidy up before selling your Sussex or Morris County home--Team Nest Builder knows: home buyers DO peek--or you’re just tired of tripping over your shoes, struggling through sweaters and pulling out wrinkled pants, we’ve got the tips that’ll get your closet cleaned out and organized in a jiffy!

First Things First

Face it: you don’t REALLY need to keep that gold lame one-shoulder ruffled prom dress, do you? Nope, nor half the other items in your closet. So start by pulling everything out; then group items by clothing type (blouses, pants, etc.); keep good-condition classics, basics and on-trend pieces; put sentimental pieces in a bin; donate the rest to charity. Project Self-Sufficiency of Newton loves to receive dry-cleaned business clothes for their Working Women’s Wardrobe and prom dresses January-April for their prom shop. Drop-box charities usually located near grocery stores and churches accept it all!

Hook Me Up

Installing hooks on the inside top half of your closet door allows you to hang up hats, purses or tomorrow’s work outfit. Don’t settle for simple; let decorative hooks mirror your fashion sense!

Shoes, shoes everywhere? Tackle that situation by sticking narrow hooks on opposite sides of the bottom half of your closet door, then hanging a towel rod on them. You want the hooks to lie close enough to the door that your heels fit snugly when hung on the rod. This way, they won’t come flying off when you open and close the door. Sneaker fan? Hang them up on S-hooks along the towel rod.

It’s Curtains for You!

Do you have sliding or accordion doors that make accessing the far reaches of your closet difficult? Remove them and replace with curtains. You’ll no longer be tempted to stash piles of clean clothes in the corners, and you’ll be able to see and reach what you’d like to wear.

Section 3

Add shelves and drawers to create 3 sections: two for hanging items (on the left and right), and a center section for folded clothing. (Check out IKEA’s shelf/drawer combos.) Fill the shelves with sweaters, and add clear bins in spare shelf space for storing accessories. Not handy? Hmmm....Got an unused dresser? Stick it in the closet and secure a shelf unit on top instead! Insta-storage!

Top to Bottom

Now, separate tops from bottoms, then group by type: dresses, button-down shirts, etc. Done? Nope. Go back and further group each of THOSE groups by color. Now, doesn’t that look nice?

Heels and Boots and Sandals, Oh My!

Place stackable shoe racks under dresses for easy viewing and selection, and hang boots up in a clear plastic boot holder. (Walmart’s Whitmor Hanging Boot File works great!) Follow by corralling sandals and flip-flops in multi-shelved magazine holders laid on their backs.

Lastly, strategically place shelf dividers along the top shelf, creating tidy cubby-like spots for bags and hats. This stops the eventual sliding of everything all together into one big jumble.

Done? Stand back, admire your work and breath a sigh of relief. Aaaaaaah. Then get moving and tackle the NEXT big cleanout in your Sussex or Morris County home--after all, it’s Springtime!
