SPARTA, NJ - A season that started off with a first-ever meet in Staten Island for the Gardiner Relays in December concluded with Sparta sending four athletes to the NJSIAA Meet of Champions this weekend in Toms River.
Andrew Pondiscio, Cayleigh Glew, Gianna Marcones and Carlie Wilson represented the Sparta Winter Track team after qualifying in NJSIAA Group 2 finals. Andrew placed sixth in the state in the High Jump at the Meet of Champions
Pondiscio and Wilson had finished first in the high jump qualifying events while Glew qualified with a fifth in the 55m high hurdles.
The team was coached by Rich Heckman and Bob Gilmartin. There were records broken throughout the season. School records were broken at the NJSIAA Group 2 relays by Glew and Michaela Pampin, as well as Marcones and Emily Kosker. Erin Finnegan and Carlie Wilson tied a school record. Marcones set a school and county record in the 60m high hurdles race in January. Marcones also set a school record and tied the county record in NJSIAA North Group 2 sectionals in the 55m high hurdles.
The team will be back in action in the spring for track and field. They will be led by seniors Max Carlson, Ben Giugliano, Payton Markvicka, Michael Mysh, Michaela Pampin, and Jason Rotondi.
